Bienvenidos a Antigua / Welcome to Antigua

Eduardo y yo
Cuándo no he estado corriendo o estudiando, he estado yendo a fuera con unos amigos - principalment Eduardo o Anna.

- ENGLISH -

It was July and I was travelling with my friend Nick in Mexico. My big trip had just begun and we were in Playa del Carmen. We were eating breakfast in a hostel close to the beach. Whilst we were eating, a man from England came and sat at our table. We spoke about his trip and he told us that he had been studying Spanish for a month in Guatemala.

In that moment I was curious because I wanted to improve my Spanish before travelling through central and south America. I asked him how his experience was and he told me that it was really good and you don't need to spend hundreds of pounds for lessons. Naturally I was curious and after Nick left I looked for a school like the one the guy had said.

I was only looking for 10 minutes when I found the "Antiguena" school in Antigua, Guatemela. The school offers between 15 and 30 hours of 1-2-1 lessons per week and they can find you a room with a Guatemalan family close to the school. For me, it was not a hard decision and I quickly reserved a place at the school.

Two and a half months later, its now the 20th of October and today is my final Spanish class. I have already been here for 7 weeks, of which 6 I have been studying. I have studied every weekday for 4 hours during the afternoon in a beautiful setting. My classes are in a large garden, 15 minutes from my home and it has space for more or less 50 students and their teachers. The garden is really beautiful and has lots of tropical plants and trees. I really like that there are banana trees, orange trees and avocado trees because there aren't any in England.

When I arrived here my Spanish was really basic. I had travelled for a year in total through Mexico in the past 5 years and I had only learnt enough to survive. I could order food and drinks, I could make reservations and I could converse with people I met on a very basic level. The most difficult thing was that I could only speak in the present tense. If I wanted to talk about events in the past or the future, I had to use my hands to imply when I was speaking about. In addition, I was frustrated frequently because I always wanted to speak more. When you stay with a Latino family who only speak Spanish, you want to say more to them than just "how are you?" or "what are you up to?"

After 6 weeks of classes, I feel that my Spanish has improved a lot. I am understanding much more when I am out and on the street and slowly I am starting to feel that I can converse. I still frequently need to use my translator on my phone, but forming the structure of my words is getting easier.

The most difficult think for me in Spanish is the tenses. Normally, when people think about tenses they think there are three - the past, the future and the present. I was surprised then when I discovered there were not three... not five... not even 10. No... there are 16 tenses to learn. And with every tense you have to learn 5 different words for the pronouns - for example, the verb "to go" has:

"I go, you go, he/she goes, we go, they go"

(English is comparatively easy in that the word 'go' changes only in the 3rd person. In Spanish however, the word changes each time you change who is carrying out the action (i.e. I/You/He/She/We/They)

For this reason, learning Spanish isn't possible in a few weeks. Sure, you can learn the basis, but I feel that you would need months of classes and years of practice to be able to speak fluently.

Whilst this challenge may seem impossible, I have had a really good teacher. She has taught for 10 years and with her help my Spanish has improved a lot. The thing I have liked most is our conversations. She is really easy to speak with and I have been able to talk about everything. From my experiences in England to my plans for the future... from the situation at home to my nights out with friends in Antigua. It has been really fun because I have been able to be myself with her... and that includes my filthy and sarcastic sense of humour. I think that there have been times that I have shocked and surprised her but now she is used to me. Either way, I am really thankfil for her help and patiences as I know that I'm not the easiest student to teach.

Whilst I have been studying, I have lived with a Guatemalan family. The family has been really nice and for almost two months they have been my family too. The family have prepared all of my meals Monday to Friday and it has been good to have other people with which to practice my Spanish. That said, if I'm honest, Guatemalan food is nothing like that of Mexico and I miss Mexican food a lot.

Eva, her daughter Mariela and me
In between my classes I have done one of two things. I have run maybe 4 or 5 days a week and I am now feeling in much better shape and much healthier. In fact, I decided that I am going to run my first marathon next year in Brazil so that I can return home to England in really good form.

Eduardo and I - drunk
When I haven't been running or studying I have been going out with friends - mainly Eduardo or Anna. I met Eduardo online and since meeting we have seen each other twice each week. We have spent a lot of nights drunk and we've had a really good time. We get on well because we have the same attitude and sense of humour and also because we are a bad influence on one another.

I met Anna in San Cristobal de las Casas in Mexico because we both stayed in the smae hostel. She is from Canada but now lives in Antigua with her baby who is nearly a year old.

So... what am I going to do next?

My plan is to travel to other places in Guatemala for 3 weeks before travelling through all of central and south America until the end of June or start of July, when I will return back to England. I don't know what is going to happen during this trip but I am sure that my experiences here in Antigua will help me to have the best time of my life!
