The Journey So Far

Where have I been?

Overview

Leg 1: Cancun, Mexico to Melchor Ocampo, Mexico

1st July - 2nd August 2017

For the most part, the first leg of my journey was spent travelling alongside Nick, a good friend from back home in North Devon. Consequently, these first four weeks felt more akin to a holiday than traditional backpacking and was a nice way to ease myself back into a life on the road and out of a backpack.

The adventure began on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico where the first week was spent out on the beaches, drinking beer, eating tacos and slowly getting our skins used to the Mexican Sun. Full, drunk and burnt we set off on what was an 8-day overland trip towards Mexico City where we spent the remaining nights before Nick flew back home. From there, I spent the final week just outside Mexico City in the town of Melchor Ocampo where I stayed with the Mexican family who hosted me some 5 years ago on what was then my very first trip to the country.

Locations: ENGLAND: London. MEXICO: Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Mujeres, Bacalar, Palenque, San Cristobal de las Casas, El Cañon del Sumidero, Mexico City, Melchor Ocampo

Highlights: Beaches, cenotes, Palenque, el cañon del Sumidero, copious amounts of booze, tacos in Mexico City, meeting up with Kattia & Adri via CouchSurfing, sharing the whole experience with Nick, reuniting with the Perez-Cortes family

Lowlights: Near-endless sweating in the Yucatan, mosquitoes, Bacalar (town), being pick-pocketed

Leg 2: Melchor Ocampo, Mexico to Antigua, Guatemala

2nd August - 1st September 2017

The second leg of my journey took me to parts of Mexico I'd not before visited and on a giant loop out from Mexico City to the Pacific Coast before dropping south to the Guatemalan border via Oaxaca.

With Nick having gone home at the end of the first leg, this second leg felt distinctly different. Apart from having a lot more alone time I found myself being much more social in hostels and made more effort to meet people online with whom I could share a coffee(s) or beer(s) and explore the cities which these people call home.

Locations: MEXICO: Melchor Ocampo, Guanajuato, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita, Morelia, Paracutin, Oaxaca, San Cristobal de las Casas. GUATEMALA: Antigua

Highlights: Travelling solo, exploring parts of Mexico I'd not yet been, colonial cities, CouchSurfing, meeting Jess, Sayulita, horseback riding up a volcano, tomales oaxaqueños,

Lowlights: Horseback riding up a volcano

My Journal Entries

Throughout this adventure I have been keeping an online journal so that I can document and share my experiences whilst travelling. Below are all of my entries in the order in which they were published:
